601, 609, 615 N Liberty St
Historic Information
Built in 1925, 601 N. Liberty Street was the home of Efird Grocery Store. The structure was built sometime after World War II by Francis B. Efird, and later operated by his sons following his death in 1938. The adjacent building, 609 N. Liberty Street, was constructed in 1948 and originally housed a furniture store. The buildings represent what the National Park Service calls “the working man’s downtown” where farmers came to sell their tobacco and other products, and stayed to purchase goods that best addressed their needs.
