Historic Information
The Mayes House is the only surviving turn-of-the-century house remaining in Charlotte’s old Second Ward; one of the few remaining fine houses building on the once-fashionable Morehead Street; and a rare intact example of the Shingle Style in Charlotte. Named after John Mayes, a textile mill executive, and built around 1902, the house features an asymmetrical form dominated by a cross-gambrel roof and shingle upper elevations. The building’s interior is comprised of fashionable late Victorian elements and was home to the Mayes family for nearly a quarter of a century.
