Historic Information
The 1911 Iroquois Theater was purpose-built as a live jazz venue in the once vibrant African-American commercial and entertainment district known as “back of town” of New Orleans. John Hasse, curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution, said of the district, “There is no other block in America with buildings bearing so much significance to the history of our country’s great art form, jazz.”
