1200 Canal St.
Historic Information
The Joy Theater was named after its original owner, Joy Houck. Constructed in 1946 by Favrot & Reed Architects, it seated 1,250 movie goers and was one of New Orleans’s four original theaters alongside the Orpheum, the State Palace and the Saenger. It closed in 2003 as megaplex theaters rose in popularity, and the theater sustained significant damage from Hurricane Katrina. In 2011, it was purchased by NOLA Theater District, renovated and reopened that December as a world-class multi-use entertainment venue.
