Constructed in 1870 and located in the Old River Road Historic District, 1220 Old River Rd was originally home to the Vessel Owners’ Meat Market. Throughout the 19th Century, the building played an important role in the local maritime economy. In 1912, Hausheer & Sons, the company from which the historic name was derived, acquired the building and moved its maritime-focused grocery business there. Hausheer & Sons would remain at 1220 Old River Road for the remainder of its long history, gaining a reputation among Great Lakes ship stewards as the preeminent supplier of groceries and provisions in Cleveland. The adjacent buildings—1198 and 1204 Old River Road—are non-contributing assets in the district.
